They don't call them Pub 'Crawls' for nothin!!!

Being the very loyal and faithful student that I am, I jumped at the oppurtunity when the college organised a Pub Crawl for us! I saw this as a perfect oppurtunity to learn about the German culture and to meet some of the local peoples. Oh and the 4 pubs had something to do with it as well, but for arguments sake i'll say it was the culture.

We met in a place called Fat Tire Bike Tours which turned out to be the company who organised the pub crawls (Their mission statement is "Walking is stupid" Classic!!!). Bit of an unusual start but interesting none the less. We stocked up on beer and began the crawl around 8.30. It legal to drink alcohol on the streets so there was no let up!!

The first stop was a bar called Ping Pong. This was hands down, one of the coolest bars i'd ever been in. It was quite small but the main feature was a single ping pong table in the front room. After paying a €5 deposit to the barman and receiving my paddle I made my way to the table. Now this isn't just any game of ping pong, the one game can involve the whole bar. Basically everyone walks around the table and takes turns hitting the ball until it finally whittles down to two final players who play till one person loses the play five times. It was incredible and it was funny to see how into it some people were!! The bar itself was very under-decorated with wires hanging here and there and none of the furniture matched. It was a refereshing change from the usual kind of bar you find. And the music was really good as well!!

We only stayed there for an hour or so and then we made our way, hesitantly, to a bar that specialised in Absinthe. For those of you who dont know, I recommend you click the link and read about it. Its basically a liquor with 80% alcohol and is known to cause hallucenations. I was a bit wary at first, but then I thoguth "When in Rome!!" and had one, or two. Its actually not as bad as I thought it would be. It's not just a straight shot, thankfully!! First you dip a sugarcube on a spoon into the glass and let it get soaked in alcohol. The you take it out, light it and wait for it to melt. Then put the sugar back into the glass, still on fire, and stir it. When you're happy that its well mixed, pour in a small measure of water to put out the flames. That bit is important because if you dont... well lets just say your throat would be pretty soar. After that, its down the hatch!!

We stayed there for a while and then moved onto the third bar. I actually dont remember the name of this place because I think the Absinthe had kicked it. I was paying that much attention either as we were being lead everywhere so you just had to follow. I decided to take it easy at this point and skipped the drink at this place. I should also point out that between each bar, the tour guides were giving out shots along the way. The funny thing was, it's illegal to pour shots into glasses in public, so we had to stand there with our mouths open and let them pour it in. Really weird but quite funny looking back.

After the third bar we made our way to our final stop. A night club who's name escapes me at the minute. It was pretty standard, except for this picture under the DJ booth...

THE HOFF!!!

Apparantly they worship him over here. People were offering to take our picture beside him!!! We politely declined. We hung around there for a while then made the long trek home!! Overall a very good night and i'm proud to say that I didn't crawl once!!
